Guns, Gamers and Guitar Hero
Freddie W's Q&A with Droku

DROKU: Have you had any Guitar Hero injuries (or injuries from your video shoots)?
FREDDIE W: I have learned to always do neck stretches, because constant head banging can cause neck soreness and stiffness the day after. That’s super important!
DROKU: What’s the first film you ever made and your first use of special effects?
FW: The first thing I ever made was a light saber movie with my brother, shot on my dad’s Digital 8 camera – we were incredibly young.
DROKU: You have a lot of knowledge about things like guns, explosions and how to put together action sequences – where did you learn about all those things?
FW: Watching a lot of movies, YouTube, and Wikipedia, pretty much.
DROKU: You make a video every week or two; how do you keep coming up with so many great ideas?
FW: Brandon and I have a good brainstorming process – it’s a lot of weird ideas kicked back and forth until it settles into something we both like.
DROKU: How long does it usually take – from start to finish – to finish a YouTube video?
FW: Usually under one week: one day to shoot, one to two days to edit, three to four days for VFX, sound design, music, and color correct.
DROKU: You just had your Rollercoaster Day 2011 – how did it feel to have so many people come out from all over to ride roller coasters with you?
FW: Incredibly awesome! Brandon and I have been doing that for years now, and it’s really gratifying to be able to share the joy of having no lines at the amusement park with a big group of people. It makes me a little worried for how many people might show up next year though!
DROKU: You recently guest-starred in a Wong Fu film with NigaHiga — was it different collaborating with other YouTube filmmakers?
FW: Every YouTube filmmaker gets into filmmaking from a different perspective – some of them have never done any formal training, others have. It’s really interesting to see everyone’s shooting style, which is way more diverse than most of my film school friends, who all do things a very specific way because that’s how they were trained, or that’s how they learned. I think new media demands new methods of production, and getting to see what works and what doesn’t from such a wide array of people is super informative.
DROKU: You’ve collaborated with people like Andy Whitfield, Kevin Pollack, and Shenae Grimes – is there someone you’d like to work with that you haven’t yet?
FW: Nicholas Cage. Hands down. He’s easily my favorite actor of all time.
DROKU: You were featured on G4, “Last Call with Carson Daly,” and you’ve done promo work for the movie “Machete” – what do you think about the attention you’ve been getting from mainstream Hollywood?
FW: For now, it’s very much been people not quite understanding what we do – we’ve had to explain the YouTube Partner program dozens of times now to all kinds of different people. Luckily for us, we’re in a position where we don’t need mainstream Hollywood to grasp what we’re doing because we’re lucky enough to be able to support ourselves at the moment, without needing to defer to the support from the mainstream.
DROKU: You really embrace your “nerd” identity. How do you feel about the response you’ve gotten?
FW: I’m told that not many girls watch our videos. I don’t see why – there’s both guns and explosions!
DROKU: What projects are you working on at the moment (that you can tell us about)?
FW: We’re working on some big longer form projects for this year that we’re very excited about, but not quite ready to reveal details of just yet.
DROKU: What is a goal or dream that you have right now?
FW: I want to be able to manual a skateboard for like 100 feet straight. How cool would that be, right?
DROKU: What is your all-time favorite video game?
FW: In terms of sheer fun that I had, probably Secret of Mana on SNES. In terms of sheer time spent, either Battlefield 2 or the first Modern Warfare.
DROKU: What video games have you been playing lately and what have you been watching (TV, Film)?
FW: It kills me that I don’t have a lot of time for games, but I just started L.A. Noire (which is the best game ever if you live in LA because you know all the streets in the game), and I’ve been watching the new season of Dr. Who, which under Moffat’s direction, is easily the best thing on TV right now. I’m going to wait on Game of Thrones to finish before marathoning it all, and I’m really looking forward to Transformers 3 this summer.
DROKU: Who are your favorite YouTubers?
FW: Too many to list but Epic Meal Time, FPS Russia, mastermilo82, rubydog189 to name a few.
DROKU: We saw you playing an interesting instrument on your brother’s Zelda medley – what was that and how did you learn how to play it?
FW: That’s a mandolin. I’m still learning how to play it, but luckily I have some experience on guitar, so my left hand strength and right hand picking technique has already got a head start.
DROKU: Your brother Jimmy (of “Ching Chong! Asians in the Library Song” fame) just won YouTube’s NextUp! contest. What was your reaction?
FW: “Totally awesome – so something rad with the money, bro!”
